As a special treat, my husband William and I enjoy going to the Garden Cantonese Restaurant located on Bangor High Street, for a Cantonese meal. The original proprietors, Andrew, and his wife have been running the restaurant since 1985 and believe that three basic principles are essential for success – Good Food, Good Service and a Good Environment. Their website further expands on the unique and authentic flavours served in the traditional Cantonese surroundings. What makes them stand out is their ability to cater for allergy sufferers.  I have a garlic allergy, but they easily and cheerfully adjust the ingredients for most dishes that I would like.

I have been a regular customer of the Garden Restaurant since 1985. It has been a tradition to celebrate my birthday with friends, and they used to serve a delicious Banquet Selection. Over the years, their family members have become involved in the restaurant, and I am always warmly welcomed by name, which makes me feel very special.

Valentine’s Day Dinner

Our most recent visit was on Valentine’s Day. I had my favourite starter, Chicken and Sweetcorn soup, to which the Chef had added a certain little something that made the soup taste richer and warmer. My husband had Duck Spring Rolls, which were very different from the ordinary Spring Rolls, served with dipping sauce.

For the main course, I chose Crispy Chicken pieces in Lemon Sauce, Egg Fried Rice, and Chinese Leaves. The chicken was perfectly crispy and tender, coated with a light tempura batter. William chose his favourite Sizzling Fillet Steak with Green Peppers and Black Bean Sauce, Egg Fried Rice, and Chinese Leaves. William’s fillet steak was tender, tasty, and beautifully spiced.

There were two new additions to the Dessert menu – Marshmallow Delice and Japanese Cheesecake which our lovely waiter suggested. I chose the Marshmallow Delice, which was like a nougat bar with biscuits and strawberry ice cream – rich, chewy, and delicious. William had the Japanese Cheesecake, which he described as eating a cloud – sweet but very light – the perfect end to his meal.

We relaxed and chatted over how much we had enjoyed our dinner, and promised ourselves that we would be back very soon.
